CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. --- A red, itchy rash showing up on some swimmers in Carolina Beach has some people concerned.

  • The red, itchy rash shows up after showering or drying off.
  • If you have the rash, rinse in clean, warm water.
  • Use anti-itch creams to calm the rash.

However, town officials say not to worry the rash is from "sea lice" or thimble jellyfish, which can sting causing a red, itchy rash.

The condition usually appears after a swimmer showers or dries off.

It's safe to swim during "sea lice" season but town officials say if you experience the rash you should rinse and clean off the area with warm water.

Rubbing with a towel will only make the sting worse.

You can also use a topical anti-itch cream to calm the rash.
