HAMPSTEAD, N.C. – Authorities say a potential threat to a Topsail school led another student to arrive armed with a semi-automatic rifle in response.

  • Two students were taken into custody.
  • Both charged with possession of a weapon on educational property.
  • No students were injured.

Now, both students are charged with bringing a weapon on campus.

Pender County Sheriff's deputies say they found 18-year-old Matthew Sheehan with a large knife strapped to his leg and three other knives in his possession while sitting in his car in front of Topsail High School Tuesday morning.

While checking out Sheehan, authorities were alerted to another man driving erratically near the school.

Authorities stopped the driver, 16-year-old Alan Edwardo Jr. and found him with a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle.

Deputies say Edwardo told them he heard the school was under a code red lockdown and he was rushing to the school to stop the shooting.

Five schools in the area were placed on lockdown.

No one was hurt.
