HAVELOCK, N.C. -- In honor of Memorial Day, about 200 hundred pairs of military boots are lining the streets of Havelock until Monday.
- 200 boots are on the ground to honor fallen heroes
- Salute the Boot is organized by Havelock Appearance Commission
- Memorial extends from Havelock City Park to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point
It's all to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. The annual Salute the Boot memorial is put on by the Havelock Appearance Commission. Each year, the organization collects donated boots for the display.
Some even have a photo of the fallen service member attached along with a brief story. Area residents say they will always honor the fallen heroes.
"The thing about it is we all should never forget this,” said Steve Felton, a Havelock resident. “It's not just we have a cook out or whatever, but remember our fallen soldier, remember what they've done for us, remember how they sacrificed their lives for our country. That's the most important thing about Memorial Day.”
For the first time ever, the Salute the Boot display extends from Havelock City Park down Roosevelt Boulevard to the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point main gate.
