WILMINGTON, N.C. -- If you are parking in downtown Wilmington, rates could be increasing.

  • Could mean prices go from $1.25 to $1.50, and from $5 to $10 in decks.
  • Officials looking at other cities to determine rate
  • Changes could start January 2019

City council members will discusss boosting the fee schedule at their upcoming meeting.

For meter parking, that could mean going from $1.25 to $1.50 per hour and decks could see a $5 to $10 raise depending on reserved and unreserved.

Officials say last year they collected $3 million from parking and are projecting this year's to be a quarter of a million dollars.

They say they are looking closely at other cities to determine the new rate.

"For example cities such as Durham or Asheville or Charleston [or] Savannah and see what their rates are and were comparable," said Wilmington City Spokesperson Dylan Lee.

Some visitors say the increase isn't enough to stop them from going downtown.

"I mean you got to know that you're coming here for that and there's going to be something like that you're going to have to deal with so it wouldn't really impact anything for us I don't think," said Durham resident Nate Bennett.

Council members will discuss the changes at their 6:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday at city hall.

The money for the parking goes towards the upkeep to the parking decks and updating technology.

If the increase does go up, drivers can start seeing the change in January of 2019.
