ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. -- Believe it or not, hurricane season is just one month away.

  • Last category 4 hurricane hit the coast in 1954
  • Hurricane season starts in June
  • County officials are making sure they are prepared if one occurs

On Tuesday, local, state and federal leaders in Onslow County discussed their plan in the event of a category four hurricane. Evacuation routes, resource management and relocation of citizens were some of the topics up for discussion.

It was also opportunity to reevaluate current procedures and recovery efforts. According the National Weather Service, the biggest concern during a tropical weather event is water, with more than 80 percent of deaths caused by storm surge or flooding.

"Majority of our population here in Onslow County has never seen a category four and during that time frame, we were somewhere between 40,000 and 80,000 in population,” said Norman Bryson, Onslow County Emergency Services Director. “Now we're 200,000, so it’s a good time to start preparing and talking what if the scenario happens here."

Hurricane Hazel was the last category four to hit the coast back in 1954.
