WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge is set to undergo a $13 million overhaul.

North Carolina Department of Transportation says years of wear and tear have corroded some of the concrete and steel. They’ll repair that and will also replace the grid deck. To cut down on traffic issues, crews will primarily work at night. However, after Labor Day, some daytime lane closures are expected.

"It's going to be a bit of a headache because of the closures. But in the long-run for the safety of everyone and to keep it operational until we have another crossing, this is a good thing,” said Pat Battleman, Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The overnight lane closures are expected to begin next month. NCDOT says they expect to wrap up the project by April 2019.
