NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. -- Parents from around New Hanover County are voicing their concerns about a school redistricting plan.

At Tuesday night's meeting, new maps were revealed showing more than 750 students could be switching high schools.

The county says redistricting is needed to help alleviate overcrowding.

Right now, two plans are on the table and some of the proposed changes include moving some landfall community students from Laney to New Hanover High.

With the revised maps, the board is also looking to keep the Glen Meade community at New Hanover.

In addition, the school system is considering letting seniors and juniors stay at their current school if they wish, but some students are still concerned.

"It’s very detrimental both academically and socially," said student Edwin West. "And having to move high schools is not a good thing. And even grandfathering in juniors and seniors like the board was saying is not enough in my opinion. Each student should be able to stay in their high school if they’re there right now."

The board was set to make a final decision later this month but are considering postponing that until march.
