WILMINGTON, N.C. -- While the coastal area avoided the potential Tropical Storm Irma, residents still saw their fair share of heavy wind and rain.

But with improving conditions people are now making their way to the sandy beaches at Wrightsville Beach.

The National Weather Service had issued a tropical storm warning from Surf City to Duck along the Outer Banks on Tuesday.

Forecasters say the storm is expected to head out to sea Tuesday night.

On Monday, officials put up the red flag warnings to caution beachgoers thinking about taking a dip. But with the most serious threat in the rearview, beachgoers are making their way back to the water.
