CHARLOTTE - A Charlotte-Mecklenberg police officer has been arrested and charged with obtaining prescription drugs by fraud.

According to the police department, Jennifer Wolfe, 37, is charged with five counts of Obtaining Schedule II Controlled Substance (Opioids) by Fraud.

She was arrested on Tuesday around 12:30 p.m.

An employee at Danze Dentistry in Matthews tipped off CMPD, and a subsequent investigation revealed that Wolfe had been getting fraudulent prescriptions for pain killers from another employee of the practice.

Matthews police have charged 46-year-old Roberta Porter with the same fraud charge, as well as trafficking opium.

Wolfe who has been with the department since 2011, was on paid administrative leave at the beginning of the investigation, but is now on unpaid leave.

"I am disappointed and saddened that one of our officers is being charged with this serious offense. The men and women of this organization are regular people, who face the same challenges as the rest of our community. Unfortunately, we are not immune from the growing opioid epidemic. We represent the law and must hold ourselves accountable when we violate it," said CMPD chief Kerr Putney in statement.

CMPD and Matthews police are still investigating.
