WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. -- Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue is preparing for the fast approaching 2017 summer season.

Lifeguard candidates attended the first of two tryouts Sunday at Crystal Pier.

Testing includes a half-mile swim, one mile beach run and two mock rescues.

Ocean Rescue officials say it's more than just a full-time job. It's about keeping beachgoers safe and potentially saving lives.

If you're interested in joining the Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue Team and missed this round of tryouts, you'll have another chance on May 6 at 8:30 a.m.
