A man has been indicted in connection with the murder of 6-year-old Zymere Perkins.
Rysheim Smith, 42, who is the boyfriend of the child's mother, has been charged with murder, manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child.
Prosecutors say Smith repeatedly beat Perkins with a broomstick in a Harlem apartment in September.
The medical examiner says the boy died from fatal child abuse syndrome.
He was found unconscious with multiple bruises on his body and a head injury.
The city's Administration for Children's Services came under scrutiny after the agency failed to follow up on allegations of abuse.
Six ACS workers were disciplined, and the state appointed an independent monitor to investigate the agency.
