NEW BERN, N.C. -- Throughout 2016, hundreds of thousands of people traveled to New Bern to take a step back in time.

That's why Tryon Palace remained one of North Carolina's top tourist attractions for the year.

Officials say they had one of the best years yet, giving credit to a hard working staff, new features and new events.

They hope to continue bringing in record breaking crowds this year. It’s something local businesses are excited for.

"Without the customers and tourists we wouldn't be the same. You wouldn't see 20 restaurants in a two-mile radius. You wouldn't see the gift shops. You wouldn't see what you see if it wasn't for Tryon Palace," said Tom Ballance, the owner of Captain Ratty's Seafood Restaurant.

The palace is already preparing several new events and programs for 2017, including a barbeque and bluegrass festival over Labor Day weekend.
