LELAND, N.C. -- District Attorney Jon David announced this week that a Leland police officer is cleared of any wrongdoing in a deadly shooting from December 9. Authorities say officer Jacob Schwenk responded to a disturbance call where someone was driving erratically. According to police radio traffic, about three minutes after Schwenk responded, gunfire was exchanged with Brent Quinn, who died at the scene.

The police chief said their jobs put their lives on the line every day.

“Every morning when they get up they take a chance that they may not come home and see their wife and kids again. And it’s a serious thing. The last thing an officer wants to do is take another person’s life. But unfortunately, sometimes you’re put in that situation,” said Mike James, Chief of Police.

Schwenk is out of the hospital and still recovering from the shooting.
