WILMINGTON- At New Hanover Regional Medical Center the premature babies always have someone to cuddle them.

About 65 volunteers at the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) spend hours snuggling the infants in the 'cuddle zone.'

The tiny babies stay in the hospital anywhere from a few days to several months and parents aren't always able to be there.

Hospital staff say the program helps with the babies physical and language development.

Volunteers say providing comfort for the small bundles of joy is rewarding.

There is a waiting list to volunteer in the cuddle zone.
