WHITEVILLE -- Columbus County officials are working to find homes for more than 100 cats that were recently brought in. Officials said the woman who was hoarding the cats had good intentions but things got out of hand. She was feeding stray cats and failed to spay or neuter the animals. The shelter said they are at full capacity and are in desperate need of people who are willing to adopt.

"This has strained our resources to the limit. We are desperately trying to find people to adopt these animals, even if it's just temporarily, so we can have space. We have got to get the word out there or there will be about 100 cats that will be put to sleep,” said Joey Prince, Columbus County Animal Shelter Director.

The shelter said they have also extended operating hours from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

They have most of the cats, but there are still some that have to be trapped.
