LAKE WACCAMAW -- The 5th annual NC Cardboard Boat Championship is this Saturday in Columbus County. More than 400 people are expected to come out to Lake Waccamaw to see the colorful cardboard and duct tape boats take on one another. The boats are made out of cardboard and enamel paint which help them float. Designs range from rubber duckys to small victorian houses. Event organizers said the race is expected to be bigger this year and is a great way to spend Father’s Day weekend.
“It’s really cool to see all the different creative designs that people put together. We have this event on Father’s Day weekend for a reason too. It’s a great event for you to come out with Dad and watch the boats and experience the event,” said Jonathan Medford, Event Coordinator.
Races start at noon on Saturday, but organizers said it’s a good idea to get out there a little early so you don’t miss out on any of the fun.
