New Pre­lim­inary Flood Maps Proposed for Carteret Co.

CARTERET COUNTY -- Carteret County is preparing for new preliminary flood maps to be released in June.

Last week the county previewed the maps that highlight specific areas in new, designated flood zones.

Some homes and buildings in Emerald Isle, Indian Beach, Pine Knoll Shores and Atlantic Beach have been moved to a lower-risk zone. However, areas like Beaufort have seen an increase of a more serious flood classification.

In order for a homeowner to avoid risks, insurance agents say it's important to understand your options.                     

The flood maps will not officially go into effect until 2018.
