DURHAM -- After being closed for a year of renovations, the Duke Chapel has reopened to the public.

"The Duke Chapel is an amazing building. It's one of the most beautiful buildings in the world," said President Richard Brodhead.

The Chapel closed May 11, 2015 for repairs and upgrades. The project cost $19.2 million.

Within the year, crews replaced the limestone, damaged mortar and stained-glass windows. They added lights, a new cooling system, and more than 25 miles of electrical wire and cable. They also replaced the lights and returned the organ.

"Even as we touch these stones, or the stained glass windows, or the organs, or go down to the crypt, you're touching Duke history. All of the many thousands upon thousands who built this building," said Luke Powery, the Dean of the Duke Chapel.

Several events are being held today to celebrate the reopening. For a list of events, click here.
