WILMINGTON -- Major flooding from this week's storms pulled an iron giant from its muddy perch.

For the first time in five years, the U.S.S. Battleship North Carolina actually floated. It’s usually stuck in the mud, but major flooding from this week's storms caused it to rise.

Standing water overtook the parking lot, forcing the ship to close its doors Monday. The captain said they will operate with limited hours through Wednesday. While the parking lot received a big impact, the actual ship itself is doing fine.

“The Battleship North Carolina is solid and in tact and making preparations for major construction for hull repairs deep into the winter this year,” said Capt. Terry Bragg.
