NEW BERN -- Supermarket chain Publix is opening their first location in eastern North Carolina.

The store will be opening up at the intersection of South Glenburnie Road and Tarmouth Drive in New Bern late next year.

"Excellent," said Leon White, a New Bern resident, when he heard the news. "I think Harris Teeter needs some competition."

While the Publix will be located directly across the street from a Harris Teeter, Publix managers said it will be a different kind of shopping experience.

"What's so great about Publix is that we really go above and beyond for our customers," said Kim Reynolds, community relations manager for Publix.

Reynolds said it's the little things that sets Publix apart, like free car carryout, with no tipping allowed, and regularly walking customers down aisles to find a product.

"Overall it's the level of service, the quality of products and the commitment to the community that sets Publix apart," she said.

As for why the major chain chose New Bern as their first Eastern Carolina location, Reynolds said it seemed like the right fit all around.

"The site in New Bern was a great opportunity for Publix," Reynolds said. "We're glad to be part of the redevelopment there in that area in particular."

The new Publix will be part of a larger shopping center that will take the place of an old, dilapidated Super China Buffet. It will bring not only shoppers to the area, but also jobs.

"We will employ approximately 150 associates at the store," Reynolds said. "Most of those employees will be local hires."

For folks who live in the area, it's not only a new place to get their groceries, but a chance at new opportunities in New Bern.

"I think it's good for the economy and what it's doing for New Bern--placing us on the map," said Anthony Courman, a New Bern resident.

This will be the first location east of Raleigh. Publix has 10 other locations in the state, with one that recently opened in Cary. Most of the other locations are near Charlotte.
