CHARLOTTE -- An Anson County inmate is back behind bars after escaping Saturday from the Brown Creek Correctional Institution in Polkton, with help from the inside.

Officials say 29-year-old Kristopher McNeil was found walking along Old Highway 52 near Hickory Tree Road, near the Davidson and Forsyth County line, just before 11 p.m. Sunday. H e was serving a 14-year sentence for second-degree murder and was scheduled for release in 2018.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety believes a food service worker, 33-year-old Kendra Miller, helped McNeil escape. They say she may have “given him a ride or given him access to a ride to leave the prison property.”

Miller is facing charges including harboring a fugitive, aiding and abetting, and having sex with an inmate. She had only been working at the facility for six months.
