DURHAM—NCCU Professor James Pearce is the fifth person to charge the university with discrimination.
In his EEOC complaint, Pearce said he was denied a promotion as department chair and that the job went to a lesser-qualified woman, Wendy Rountree, who will take office in July.
Pearce said he joined NCCU in 2008 as a department chairperson, but was removed from his position and denied tenure after he complained of racial discrimination when it came to hiring practices.
"I reprimanded people, hired people without any regard to the hire of their skin," said Pearce.
He filed two EEOC complaints, one resulted in him in gaining his tenure again. He says the other one has yet to be resolved.
Pearce is working alongside attorneys who clients have similar claims. Three former employees have charged the school and its chancellor, Deborah Saunders-White, with discrimination against non-blacks and misuse of taxpayers' dollars. Attorneys say some of the evidence have been turned over to the State Auditor's Office.
Time Warner Cable News reached out to the office for comment, but our request wasn't returned.
Pearce says he would like for Rountree to be removed from her appointment.
"To vacate the search or suspend the search until such time they [Human Resources] could fully investigate the charges that I made," said Pearce.
In regards with the latest complaint, school officials say they can't confirm or deny the ongoing investigation.
