SHELBY, N.C. -- SHELBY, N.C. -- What seemed like a routine traffic stop turned into something much bigger for Shelby police on Thursday.
Officers pulled over a black car off Highway 74 after receiving this call to 911.
"A lady called a friend of mine and said she was behind the car matching the description of the Charleston killer. It had a South Carolina tag on it, white male, early 20's with a bowl haircut,” said the tip caller.
That bowl haircut stood out to witnesses after seeing the face of Dylann Roof all over the news.
A manhunt for him was underway after police said he was responsible for killing nine people at a Charleston church the night before.
"Advise the suspect looks like the subject they're talking about on the news from that Charleston shooting,” said the tip caller.
Shelby police officers were careful as they approached the suspect's car, and soon enough they made the arrest after patting the suspect down several times.
"Confirm it is the suspect from the Charleston shooting,” said the 911 operator.
Once they confirmed they stopped the right car, it appears that officers gave themselves a high five realizing they caught the suspect everyone wanted across the country.
