NEW BERN -- Though the ice is melting, freezing temperatures are sticking around. That’s why homeless shelters across the stare are offering a warm place for people to sleep.

Deion King has stayed at RCS in New Bern for two weeks now.

"I'm being fed. You know if I need clothes, they’re going to provide it. Of course, they’re providing a roof and a bed, and you know I’m not cold at night—I’m not out on the street—I'm warm," said King.

RCS Shelter Director Lynn Anderson said when temperatures dip below freezing, they set up extra cots in the kitchen.

"We have those cots for the freezing weather. So we can take people in that are on the street so they won’t freeze," said Anderson.

With freezing temperatures in the forecast, there could be an influx of shelter guests. That's why RCS, along with shelters statewide, are asking for donations.

"If anybody out there could help these people—you know blankets, clothing, coats, something to eat," said Anderson.

Canned goods, a pair of pants or a warm blanket are all in demand. While these items may seem small, King said they can be life-changing.

"We have a gentleman that’s here every night, he sleeps in his clothes. He sleeps in his shoes. He doesn’t have a change of clothes. It can help-- and it’s a life changing thing. It's pretty —it's a tremendous thing that it can change someone’s life in an instant," said King.

RCS accepts drop off donations such as food, clothing and blankets. They are located at 919 George Street, New Bern, NC 28560.
