The CEO of New York City Football Club spoke on “Mornings On 1,” one day after the City Council greenlit a development project to bring a soccer stadium to Queens.

The new venue, housing 25,000 seats, will become NYCFC's home, situated across from Citi Field.

“The dream and promise of our club, I think, since day one—going back 10 years—was to build the first ever soccer specific stadium in New York City within the five boroughs. And we've been resolute about that promise, all the way through and in so it's just very fulfilling to see a day like yesterday come together,” NYCFC CEO Brad Sims said.

In addition to the soccer stadium, the development plans to bring 2,500 affordable housing units, a school, a hotel and retail space to the area.

Despite the Council's 47-1 vote, with the lone dissent from Queens Councilman Shekar Krishnan, Mayor Eric Adams has thrown his enthusiastic support behind the plan.

Sims elaborated on the stadium's planned features, highlighting in particular the stadium’s cubed entrance.

“The biggest feature is our cube entrance. It's a seven-story tall cube with 11,000 to 12,000 square feet of LED in it. You get off the 7 train, you park in the south lot at Citi Field, and you walk right up and from blocks away you'll see this thing and it's gonna get you fired up about coming to the game,” he said.

Sims also noted that the stadium will be “100% privately financed."

“We are paying taxes on the land, we'll be paying lease payments. But it's 100% privately financed, 100% union built and it's also the 100% electric stadiums. So it’ll be the first outdoor major stadium that is fully electric, only the third sports venue in the country that is fully electric,” he said.

Reflecting on the broader impact of the project, Sims expressed enthusiasm for the revitalization of Willets Point.

“We're building a live, work, and play neighborhood in Willets Point,” he said.
