The city is ramping up efforts to crack down on auto theft throughout the five boroughs.

This year, car thefts have already surpassed last year’s numbers — the highest the city has seen since 2006, according to NYPD statistics.

This is a trend that has steadily ticketed up over the last four years.

Last week, police officials warned about viral social media trends highlighting the vulnerabilities of Kia and Hyundai vehicles.

Robert Sinclair, senior manager of public affairs at American Automobile Association, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Friday to discuss more.

“It’s a crime of opportunity. Bad economy is forcing people to do things they may not normally do,” he said. “We’ve seen numbers steadily tick up since the pandemic.”
