CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. -- Thousands of Craven County students could be going to different schools in the 2015-2016 school year.
The Craven County Board of Education voted unanimously on the redistricting plan on Thursday.
The plan has been three years in the making due to overcrowding primarily in the New Bern and Havelock area schools.
Board members anticipate a lot of push back from parents and students, but feel it is necessary to make these changes.
"We encourage everyone to be positive about the change which is hard but a lot of times the stress on the adults feeds to the children. We encourage the parents to be as positive as they can be in the discussions with their children. Take them by to see the new school. Help them be excited because we did our best to move neighborhoods so that children are going to new buildings but most of them are going with their entire neighborhood so they'll have the same friends,” said Kim Smith, an education member of the Craven County Board of Education.
