A newly-certified class action lawsuit has been filed against several Rochester-area hospitals.

The complaint claims patients were overcharged for copies of their medical records in violation of New York State law.

University of Rochester and the hospitals it operates, Strong and Highland, are named as defendants.

Verisma Systems is also named, as it manages U-R Medicine’s medical records.

A senior U.S. district judge issued the decision to certify on July 28.

It applies to any patient who requested medical records from the hospitals and were charged through Verisma on or after May 14, 2011.

Two sub-classes include people who sought and received records from Highland and Strong hospitals on or after May 14, 2011.

The claim says the classes may involve hundreds of people.
