CHARLOTTE, N.C. – There is a possibility that former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and Carolina Panthers safety Eric Reid could be teammates again after settling their lawsuits with the NFL, according to Kaepernick's lawyer.

  • Kaepernick and Reid sued the league because they say they were blacklisted
  • Reid joined the Carolina Panthers in 2018
  • Kaepernick has been out of the league since 2016

The two sued the league stating they were blacklisted due to protesting social injustice and police brutality during the national anthem at games. The kneeling demonstration sparked a great debate surrounding First Amendment rights.

Reid signed with the Carolina Panthers last season and was resigned to a three-year contract while Kaepernick has been out of the league since 2016. But, could that change?

During an interview on CNN, Kaepernick’s lawyer, Mark Gergagos, says he believe the two could meet again soon if he is picked up by the Carolina Panthers. There is also speculation that he could sign with the New England Patriots or a third team.

"I'll make the bold prediction, you can save the tape. I think you're going to see within the next two weeks that somebody's going to step up. Somebody's going to do the right thing, and you want me to predict who? I would tell you besides the Panthers, it would not surprise me if Bob Kraft makes a move," Gergagos said.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton recently underwent surgery on his right shoulder. He missed the final two games for the season and is recovering. Gergagos describes it as being a “natural' fit if Kaepernick were to join the team.

"The natural would be if Cam Newton is out, then the natural place would to be to play with Eric (Reid) in Carolina," Geragos said.

Geragos did not say what the potential third team would be during the interview.
