A former New York City police officer who caused her husband's death while driving under the influence of alcohol at speeds over 100 mph was sentenced to probation as part of a plea, state Attorney General Letitia James said Thursday.

Former NYPD officer Bernadine Thomas, 36, was driving with a blood alcohol content of .10 while off-duty during the early morning of Feb. 26, 2023, when the vehicle she was operating left the road and struck a tree, killing her husband, who was riding in the passenger seat, James said.

Thomas, of Maybrook, Orange County, had been heading north on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Rockland County at up to 109 mph, James said.

She pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide on Feb. 3, 2025, and received five years’ probation as part of the plea, the attorney general said.
