TALLAHASSEE, F.L. — Attorneys for the family of a Greenville man killed during a shooting at Florida State University earlier this month spoke out publicly for the first time.
Tiru Chabba, 45, was killed on Thursday, April 17 when a lone gunman opened fire on FSU’s Tallahassee campus.
Civil rights attorney Bakari Sellers, Jim Bannister, and J. Robert Bell III spoke for the victim's family during a press conference outside of the FSU Student Union on Wednesday.
“The only conversations that the family has had with law enforcement were when they were notified of his death, and so we’re asking that there be some level of transparency. We’re asking that there be thoroughness so we can find out the what, the when, the why and the how this occurred,” Sellers said.
The family’s attorneys said while they understand police need time to investigate, there needs to be a “sense of urgency to the extent that it can be done as rapidly as possible”.
Chabba was reportedly visiting the campus for work when the shooting occurred. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
“The Chabba family has realized that there’s a mourning period that will really never end. They will never get over missing him. He won’t be there to see his children graduate from high school. He won’t be there to see them marry, to have his grandchildren,” Bannister said.
According to police, one other person was killed and six were injured in the shooting. Only one patient remains in the care of Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare and is reportedly in “good condition”.
Authorities have not yet revealed a motive for the shooting.
