ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The city of Asheville is still reeling from the impacts of Helene.

In Biltmore Village, the destruction is everywhere. It’s a stark reminder of the new reality residents face.

Many buildings are being gutted and cleaned out.

Anthony Coggiola with the Community Emergency Response Team says residents are urged to stay out of the Biltmore Village area. He wants the workers to stay safe and focus on their jobs so the rebuilding process can move along smoothly.

“We don’t want to put our workers at risk," Coggiola said. "We have hundreds of people operating equipment and walking about, we don’t need sightseers.”

Crews are still hard at work in the area and the cleanup process will be underway for a long time.

“We are contracted to do these buildings along the street and it’s getting all the mud and muck out of there,” said Justin Walton, assistant project manager for Falcon Construction.

It’s an all-hands-on deck approach to get the job done.

Walton and his crew have been at work since Sept. 29. Seeing the destruction is something he struggles to wrap his head around.

“Asheville is a tourist town, so we have to get things back and going,” Walton said.

The job weighs on the crew, but they’re determined to see this through.

“Asheville is such a quaint and beautiful city,” Walton said.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Biden administration is providing more than $20 million to Hurricane Helene survivors.

Search and rescue operations are still underway across North Carolina.
