CrossFit Wilson was affected by flooding

One of the two buildings was waist deep in water

Owner Austin Aycock said team members showed up Friday to load equipment before the storm

Sunday, the members cleaned the two buildings and returned the equipment

Businesses along one stretch of road in the 2800 block of Forest Hills Rd SW in Wilson were underwater Friday and Saturday. One of those businesses was the CrossFit Wilson Gym. Austin Aycock, the gym's owner, said he has learned what to do before bad weather.

“Oh, we first heard about a rain. It's, it's not our first rodeo. So, we've learned a lot over the years,” Aycock said.

Their workout gear, equipment and machines were removed from two buildings on Friday. “Our members just kind of helped us load up whatever equipment we could,” Aycock said.

He said the rain built up on the back portion of their property until it flooded the facilities.

When Aycock visited the gym on Saturday, it was nearly waist-high deep in water. He said he’s glad they were proactive.

“I need to kind of already be ready,” he said about pre-storm preparation.

Aycock, 38, pressure washed mats, aired out the spaces with big industrial fans and returned that equipment to its rightful place with the help of members on Sunday.

“Anybody who wants to better themselves just wants to help people. People see a need, these type(s) of people see a need and just want to come out and help and be of service,” Aycock said.

It’s not the first time flooding affected the facility.

“It's gotten in the building probably five times since I've been here since 2012,” Aycock said.

The good news is he has flood insurance. The bad news is, it may happen again because it sits in a floodplain. Even though the situation isn’t perfect, however, they can rely on each other.

“I think Wilson, just in general, is just (a) very selfless type of a city,” Aycock said.

Aycock said they will resume workouts at 5 a.m. sharp on Monday.
