A Durham man is facing gun-related charges after allegedly brandishing a weapon and making threats at a UNC campus cafe.
Mickel Deonte Harris, 27, is charged with having a gun at a school, assault by pointing a gun and communicating threats, according to Orange County court documents.
The victim, who works at Alpine Bagel Café on the Chapel Hill campus where the incident unfolded, told police that Harris pointed a gun at him, and documents show he said: “I’ll blow your head off." The bagel shop is inside the Student Union on campus near the bookstore. UNC Police Chief Brian James said there is likely a connection between the suspect and a person who works at the bagel café.
The victim told an employee she was fired from the cafe, and she then said "someone was on the way to the Union," according court documents.
“Several employees and students saw the firearm and ran from the area before calling 911,” documents say.
Local and state police were able to find Harris with the help of an arrest warrant that was issued earlier this month. He faced a judge Thursday afternoon in an Orange County courtroom, where his bond was set at $50,000.
The university was placed on a lockdown for a little more than an hour as authorities investigated Wednesday afternoon.
It was the second time the campus has been on lockdown in less than three weeks. On Aug. 28, associate professor Zijie Yan was fatally shot inside a lab building on campus. That shooting sparked a manhunt for 34-year-old Tailei Qi, and students, faculty and staff were on lockdown for hours after the shooting.
Since the incidents, students have been on edge, but classes are in session.
Golden retriever owner Geoff Scott brought his dogs, Molly and Ranger, to comfort people still reeling from all the panic.
“I thought that some of the students might need a little gentle love,” Scott said.
