A 20-year-old man, who was wanted in connection with a murder, is dead following a shootout with authorities in Raleigh early Friday morning.
Jaylen Latrelle Routt of Fayetteville led Johnston County Sheriff's Office deputies on a high-speed chase along I-40 westbound in Johnston County at about 1 a.m., according to a news release from the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
Routt didn't stop when a trooper tried to pull him over for speeding, officials said, and he pushed the Nissan Rogue he was driving up to over 100 mph as law enforcement pursued him into Wake County.
Routt eventually crashed into an open, grassy lot at the intersection of East and Branch streets in Raleigh, troopers said.
"Law enforcement officers attempted to take the driver into custody when the operator of the suspect vehicle produced a firearm and fired upon them," Sgt. Chris Knox with DPS said in the release.
Knox said the officers then shot back at Routt, and he was taken to Wake Medical after being shot. He did not survive.
Routt was wanted on multiple charges out of Cumberland County stemming from a murder. Communication from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said Routt was wanted in the death of Anthony Adams that happened on Jan. 7, 2021 near the 900 block of Emory Court in Fayetteville.
Master Trooper Harrison Nazal, who was involved in Routt's death, is a 10-year force veteran, according to Knox.
Nazal will be on administrative duty as the State Bureau of Investigation looks into the incident, which is standard protocol.
