CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte area runners continued the conversation of safety on Tuesday night. They began gathering last fall after attacks on a trail in Matthews and a greenway in Charlotte.

Lisa Landrum, founder of RunCLTRun, led the meeting.

What You Need To Know

  • Charlotte area runners are continuing the conversation on safety

  • RunCLTRun, a group that started holding safety meetings following attacks on trails in the Charlotte area last year, set up a safety tab on their website

  • They hope to have another safety forum in May

Landrum and other runners went to city council in October to ask for a bigger police presence on greenways, better lighting and more.

Since their meetings this past fall, Landrum and her group have established a running safety tab on the RunCLTRun website.

“Now there is a place that anybody can log in and shoot ideas to us or stories, or you know just really any thoughts that they have around runner safety or safety in general. And then we also have very general safety tips,” Landrum said.

Another runner, Billy Shue, said he has noticed more patrols on greenways.

We reached out to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and a spokesperson responded, saying, "Our Dual Sport officers continue to do weekly patrols on Charlotte greenways.”

They said as far as for the saturation of those officers in certain areas, “it would be up to the discretion of each individual division.”

Landrum says they’re trying to keep the momentum going by connecting with more people in the county. She hopes their group can speak in front of city council again.

Spectrum News 1 also reached out to Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation.

“As part of our future plans, staff will install additional signage on existing mile/location markers along county greenways with enhanced location information that will improve location identification for first responders,” a park and recreation spokesperson said. "Park and rec does utilize A-frame signs with QR codes on the greenways and in parks for feedback from users."

Landrum says they hope to organize another meeting in May.
