It’s a day the American Lung Association recognizes every year as a precursor to their Fight for Air Climb.
Jed Manfull is the chair of Charlotte’s Fight for Air Climb. He says taking the stairs is one simple way to improve your health.
"There is a lot of research out there about how beneficial it is to do something so simple, something that isn’t even really breaking your routine,” he said.
Stair climbing burns two to three times more calories than other exercise, according to the American Lung Association.
They say stair climbing can burn 8-11 calories per minute.
Manfull says he’s been personally impacted by lung disease, and that’s why he’s involved with the American Lung Association as a volunteer.
His grandmother passed away from lung cancer at only 68 years of age.
His father passed away from COPD, a lung disease that makes it hard to breathe.
“That’s why I got involved, you know after all of that,” he said. "I wanted to have some semblance of feeling like I could control something or do something about this.”
The Fight for Air Climb is March 25 at Truist Field.
