Rachel Rogan, who lives in Wake Forest but grew up in in the UK, decided to make the trip with her mom to pay her respects.

"I just looked at her and said, 'We’ve got to go home,'" Rogan said of suggesting the trip to her mom. "It’s a monumental occasion and it’s the celebration of an amazing woman, an amazing leader, and we really just wanted to be a part of that."

Rogan says even though she has lived in North Carolina since she was 15, her kinship and respect for the royal family, and the Queen in particular, has always remained.

"It was a really beautiful moment. Even though we were not visually able to see her, we could hear everything," Rogan said. "The camaraderie of the British people and the tourists there was really nice, and ultimately it worked out really well."

Rogan says while she is still sad about the Queen's passing, she believes King Charles III will be a great successor.
