WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Lifeguard shortages threw a wrench in last year’s pool season, and local training programs are trying to recruit to avoid a repeat.
Lifeguard training programs across the state are trying to recruit candidates to avoid shortages
The city of Winston-Salem is still trying to recruit an additional 30 lifeguards to avoid the staffing shortages of summer 2021
Program leaders encourage interested applicants to apply before the end of April
Azhane Dunwood is a senior lifeguard with the city of Winston-Salem. She loves her job, from seeing the kids’ joy when they get in the water to knowing she has the skills to help people if needed. This year, she’s also training to rescue this summer’s pool season, especially after the pandemic-related challenges of 2021.
“With COVID and stuff there were many restrictions. Kids were upset that we had to close at certain times of day,” Dunwood said.
According to city aquatics supervisor Heather Candelora, they had about 50 lifeguards last summer. As of early April 2022, Candelora said they have approximately the same amount and are trying to recruit at least 30 additional lifeguard candidates.
It’s difficult to predict where staffing levels will be when the season starts, but Dunwood hopes it will be a good summer.
“There won’t be so many restrictions. We’ll be able to enjoy our pool time with the kids and with our coworkers,” Dunwood said.
Pools across North Carolina open around Memorial Day, and Candelora encourages all interested lifeguard candidates to submit their application within the month of April. That application and more information about becoming a lifeguard for the city of Winston-Salem are available here.
