GREENSBORO, N.C. — Baseball season is back and one fan in particular got to help a minor league team, the Greensboro Grasshoppers, in a major way.
Hannah Boyd, property manager at The Greenway at Fisher Park apartments, is a lifelong baseball fan and softball player. So when the team asked her to throw the first pitch at Friday’s game, she said she wasn’t nervous a bit.
“I was very honored when he asked me to do it. So as long as I don't mess up, that would be great. My softball friends would probably disown me,” she said. “I was very honored when he asked me to do it. So as long as I don't mess up, that would be great. With hot dogs and hamburgers in hand, thousands of Grasshoppers fans packed the stadium.
Boyd’s family has always been in those same seats, and they’ll be there this time around as well. This time, however, to root for their beloved softball star, “Mom.” She’s passed the love for the game and the Grasshoppers down to her 4-year-old son, who can’t wait to watch her pitch.
“He's so excited. He wants to invite all of his friends. I told him I'd videotape it because his friends don’t believe him, which I think is hilarious,” she recounted.
Boyd has worked at The Greenway at Fisher Park for eight years and says every year for the team’s season opener game, they throw a celebration. This year’s was the first time they’ve done it since the start of the pandemic.
“I think we're going to have a really good event this year. This is the first big win we've had in a while since COVID. So it's a really good benefit for everybody,” she said.
