N.C. A&T in Greensboro is ranked in the top five HBCUs, according to College Consensus. The college ranking site references other college ranking systems, like U.S. News and Forbes, as well as student reviews to declare its ratings.

Winston-Salem State ranked 11th, N.C. Central ranked 13th and Fayetteville State ranked 15th.

Milosh McAdoo is a third-year student at N.C. A&T, studying animal sciences. He believes having an HBCU experience is beneficial for young people of color developing professionally.

The common misbelief is that HBCUs aren’t preparing other students for what others would consider the real world, but in fact it’s the opposite. The ways that I’ve grown as a professional here at A&T and the ways that I’ve grown as a person have been tremendous,” McAdoo said.

McAdoo is a White House-HBCU Competitiveness scholar, a Cheatham-White scholar, and currently works as an intern at the North Carolina Pork Council. In his career, he hopes to bridge the gap in equity and agriculture.

“I hope to cultivate leaders within the agriculture space, especially applying an equity lens within that to ensure that all folks are able to lead in agriculture and able to contribute to the industry and to the world,” McAdoo said.

N.C. A&T is the largest HBCU in the nation. Its animal sciences program is the largest program in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences with more than 400 students.

North Carolina educates the most HBCU students, with 10 historically Black institutions in the state.

The top five HBCUs, according to College Consensus, are:

  1. Spelman College
  2. Howard
  3. Florida A&M
  4. West Virginia State
  5. N.C. A&T
