Many people affected by the evacuations are asking about the plant’s future.

The City of Winston-Salem said the current focus is on clean up, and the situation is so recent that it is not time for any potential discussions about rebuilding or relocating.

Winston-Salem resident Mark Biggam lives in the house he grew up in and had to evacuate because of the blaze. He described the plant as a “fixture” in the neighborhood, but said he is one of those with questions about its future.

“I myself hope that they maybe consider moving away to a less populated area, but if they do have to stay there, that they will adhere to some very strict regulations and do whatever they can to keep the residents safe,” Biggam said.

According to a statement from Winston Weaver Company Inc., the company pledged $100,000 to local organizations to help cover costs, like hotel expenses, for evacuees.

Residents will need to contact Love Out Loud, show proof they live within that one-mile radius of the plant and submit receipts. Love Out Loud can be reached at 336-747-3067 or at serve@loveoutloudws.com
