CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One way to build some healthy habits this new year is just by taking the stairs, and Wednesday is a great day to start because it’s National Take the Stairs Day.

  • The American Lung Association wants people to participate and sign up for the Fight for Air Climb
  • The Fight for Air Climb will be on March 26 at Truist Field

The American Lung Association is challenging people in Charlotte to do just that.

After, they hope people sign up for their event in March, called the Fight for Air Climb.

Markus Hill and his teenage son Harrison Hill are participating because they are personally impacted by lung disease.

Markus was diagnosed with asthma at the age of 1, and his son was also diagnosed as a toddler.

"When I was born, my mom and dad told me stories where I turned blue and they would have to rush me to the ER,” he said. “And it got so frequent that instead of driving 20 miles, the doctor let us come to his house.”

Markus says when he was a kid, his parents didn’t have access to the information and resources that are readily available today.

"Nobody was telling them what to do or how to do and now the lung association has all of this information that people can take advantage of,” he said.

His experience with a lung disease is why he got involved with the association two years ago. He was just elected as vice chair of the leadership board in Charlotte.

“It gives me the ability to give back to the community and make sure if they go to the doctor and find out their child has asthma or their parents have COPD that they can talk to their doctor,” he said. “But that they also can go to lung.org and do a search on there and what does it mean to have asthma, what does it mean to have COPD.”

The Fight for Air Climb is March 26 at Truist Field. You can head here for more details.
