CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Boppy Company issued a recall on the Boppy Original Newborn Lounger, Boppy Preferred Newborn Lounger and Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Lounger in September citing reports of eight infant deaths associated with the products.

The infants reportedly suffocated after being placed on their back, side or stomach on the lounger and were found on their side or on their stomach. The infant deaths occurred between December 2015 and June 2020, according to The U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Elizabeth Smith works with postpartum mothers and is a mother herself. She said even if you are as exhausted as your baby, it’s not safe to let them sleep in a lounger or a swing.

“Babies should be alone on their back and in a crib, or bassinet or pack and play. Those are the three things — bassinet, crib and pack and play are the three things that are safe for sleep. They’ve passed all the standards,” Smith said.

Boppy sold about 3.3 million of the recalled loungers at juvenile product stores and mass merchandisers nationwide and online, including Pottery Barn Kids, Target, Walmart and Amazon. The loungers were sold from January 2004 through September 2021 for prices ranging from $30 to $44.

If you have a Boppy lounger, officials say to stop using it immediately and contact The Boppy Company for a refund.
