RALEIGH, N.C. — Adapting during the pandemic is something we have all had to do, whether it's with work, school or just everyday life.

Now Alexa Carlin of Raleigh is sharing her new book, appropriately titled “Adaptable." It explores how we all navigate change and how a near-death experience changed the course of her life.

What You Need To Know

Alexa Carlin is the author of Adaptable: How to Lead with Curiosity, Pivot with Purpose and Thrive through Change and CEO of Women Empower X

At 21, Carlin was medically induced into a coma and given a 1% chance to live. Now she is sharing her story by offering powerful insight on overcoming obstacles

Her book was released October 14

Everything inside Carlin's home office is intentional, from the trinkets on her desk to the pictures on her walls.

"I've always had my office in my bedroom," Carlin said with a laugh. "So to be able to finally have my own office in my house every single day, it reminds me of how far I've come, with my health, with my journey."

When Carlin was 21, she was in a medically induced coma in the hospital after an unknown bacteria got into her system. Doctors gave her a 1% chance of survival. Miraculously, she woke up six days later. The experience left her with an autoimmune disease, but also with a new outlook on life.

"I don't believe you have to overcome any obstacle to pursue what you want, so I share from within the obstacle... showing like yeah, my life is still not perfect, I am still going through all of these challenges, but I am still chasing after my dream," Carlin said.

She started Women Empower X, a business that mentors women entrepreneurs. Then she focused on writing a book, something she has wanted to do since childhood.

On October 14, Carlin released "Adaptable: How to Lead with Curiosity, Pivot with Purpose and Thrive through Change."

"I really hope this books helps people perceive their life in a different way, that fuels them, that empowers them to not give up, to continue pursuing what they love," Carlin said. "This book is really embodying the message of not focusing on the things you cannot control and right now there is so much we can't control."
