SELMA, N.C. — It’s been nearly five years since Hurricane Matthew destroyed so much of what was in its path, but five years later, My Kid’s Club of Selma, North Carolina is rebuilding.

A new headquarters is under construction and will open in 2022

My Kid’s Club is a nonprofit organization that provides summer camp and after school care for families. The club costs just $10 a year, and the children are provided breakfast, lunch and snacks.

“There is really no sort of summer or after school programs here that are widely available in Johnston County, so we kind of are trying to fill that void and grow and become that resource to families who need it,” said Club Director, John Lopp.

Since 2006, approximately 1,600 children have come through the Selma and Smithfield Clubs.

However, the club hasn’t had a permanent home in Selma since the hurricane destroyed its main building. In the meantime, the club has been sharing space with Selma Elementary School.

This week, construction began on a new headquarters for the club. The building will be located right next to Selma Elementary School, making it easily accessible to younger members.

The building will be 5,000 square feet and will include a multi-media center, classrooms and an art space for music, drama and visual mediums. There will also be a full kitchen, a cafe and flexible space for group play.

“I hope the kids will feel like the space was designed for them and feel empowered by it. It will also help us with numbers, be bigger so we can house more kids and just have a bigger impact overall,” Lopp said.

The new headquarters is expected to open in late 2022. For more information on My Kid’s Club, visit their website.
