What You Need To Know

  • A shootout at a Juneteenth block party in 2020 left four people dead, and nine others wounded

  • CMPD says no arrests have been made in the case, and there have been no new leads

  • Charles Billings, the father of one of the victims, says he waits for justice every day, and wants to know why the public has not helped police

Charles Billings' son, Jamaa Cassell, was one of the four people killed during the shooting. Billings says most of his days are spent remembering his son.

“Usually I go in my room, and turn the lights out. I like the darkness, and me and him talk,” he said. “You know, every other day I’m crying. I can be driving and start crying.”

Billings says he’s shocked by the lack of help from the public and from the 400 people who were at the party that night.

“If you got a conscience or a heart, I know you can’t sleep at night,” he said. “It would bring relief to me and my family, because I hadn’t had any sleep in a year.”

Detectives with CMPD are also frustrated and say they’ve brought in federal partners to help solve the case.

“As detectives, we put together a puzzle. The puzzle may have a hundred pieces, it may have a thousand pieces, and sometimes when there’s more pieces when you have that many people there, at a big event like this,” said Lt. Bryan Crum. “A lot of people don’t realize how important their small piece is to seeing that entire picture.”

The reward in the case is $17,500. If you have any information that will lead to an arrest, you’re asked to call Crimestoppers at 704-334-1600.
