​​DURHAM, N.C. — ​Durham gallery and letterpress studio Horse & Buggy Press and Friends is hosting it's first reception in 15 months since the pandemic started.

Owner Dave Wofford is a graphic designer focused on book design. He is passionate about making art accessible to all, and that's why he tries to show pieces of all price points.

"When you buy a piece of art or a piece of craft, you get to have it for the rest of your life, and it's really going to be an object that feeds you and your soul," Wofford said.

Wofford also opened a second art gallery, PS-118 during the pandemic. It's located on Parrish Street.​

"What I hope to accomplish with this space, is to show people that art and craft can be fun," said Wofford.

One thing that makes him stand out are his two letterpress machines at Horse & Buggy Press and Friends.

Popularity in letterpress declined in the 1970's with the rise of computers, but saw a resurgence in the 1990's thanks to personalized invitations. So while Wofford bought one of his first letterpress machines for $600, now it would go for around $6,000.

"One of the big advantages of it is all this work lets the type really show as a three dimensional artifact," Wofford said. "So it makes a tactile print that's a little more intimate."

Wofford is hosting his first reception June 5 at his Broad Street location from 3 - 6 p.m. He will have musicians on site, as well as art and floral arrangements for sale.
