CARY, N.C. — Gas remains scarce in the triangle following the reopening of the Colonial Pipeline on Wednesday night.
According to GasBuddy, nearly 70% of gas stations in the state remained without fuel Friday night.
Colt-Land Towing & Recovery in Cary has been in businesses for 22 years.
Jackson Wetherby has been helping his step-father run the business for the past three years.
Wetherby said normal protocol for a driver who ran out of gas would be to bring them gas to refuel or take them to a nearby gas station. But he said due to panic buying that's licked the pumps dry, that's currently not an option.
“Our biggest way is just trying to help people get their vehicles to a safe area to be able to wait until there is gas available,” Wetherby said.
He said on a normal day they only receive one to two calls for help.
"It’s actually been keeping people at home for the most part," Wetherby said.
Wetherby says it's only a matter of time before the calls start coming in.
For drivers who may find themselves teetering on the edge of empty and not able to make it to a gas station or find gas near them, Wetherby offered some advice.
"If you realize you’re going to run out of gas before you get somewhere safe, just make sure you’re pulling off the side of the road away from a lot of traffic. It gives you space, so you're safe and away from traffic. It also gives us space to come and help you in any way," Wetherby said.
