Raleigh's seasonal pools are increasing capacity to 75% and foregoing reservation requirements as restrictions ease across North Carolina.
However, Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center is the only location that will still require a lane reservation.
Laury Holley, the director for the city's seasonal pools, has been working for months to get the pools ready to safely welcome in more swimmers.
All swimmers and staff are required to have their temperatures checked and answer a health questionnaire before entering the facility.
Social distancing is being regulated in the lap pool with four swimmers per lane.
“What we try to do is leave the lane lines in so that people have 6-feet spaces in between the lane lines and as more people come in. We just add more people to the lane and keep them 6 feet apart," Holley says.
She says in order to keep public spaces like the bathrooms and locker rooms sanitized throughout the day, they've had to shift employees, which has been one of the biggest challenges.
“They’re taking positions from having lifeguards and we're having to pull them to do their other positions, so we are having less lifeguards. We need lifeguards, or we need other positions because were having to pull our staff," Holley says.
Holley says they are trying to hire people for all kinds of roles. Although it has not been a problem yet, they may have to backtrack on some programs due to the staffing shortage.
The Buffaloe Road Aquatics Center is still requiring reservations for recreational swimming.
Swimmers will be required to wear face masks when they are outside of the pool.
According to the CDC, there is no known evidence of COVID-19 spreading to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, or treated aquatic areas.
